Chapter Sixteen

Daisy hadn’t locked the door, at least, so it wasn’t hard to enter behind her. I did pause to bar the way, however, not wanting a certain nosy half-sister with grudges and vitriol to make her way into the conversation I was about to have with the best friend I’d ever had.

Speaking of whom, she wasn’t in her bedroom, the door to the bathroom ajar and light on inside. I followed the sound of her hiccupping distress, hugging Daisy the instant I was in her presence.

She clung to me, a wad of tissues in one hand, sobbing on my shoulder while her whole dear body shook with whatever it was that had wound her up so much she broke down in public. Not that Daisy was stoic, mind you, but she’d always had a certain presence to her, the ability to see the lighter side of things, even murder at times.

Tonight? A totally different story and there was no way she was this upset over a dead body showing up at her party. Day simply wasn’t that shallow. There was something deeper going on and I was positive it’s insidious evil had to do with a pair of unwelcome Hawthornes.

Not like there wasn’t precedence to her descent into unhappiness. Rose herself had managed to tie Day up into knots only a few years ago, enough I worried then, too, our friendship might be over. My bestie bounced back, kicked her nasty relative to the curb (if only she’d been run over by a bus)(yes, I am aware wanting Rose dead makes me a bad person)(don’t tell me you weren’t thinking it, too) and restored herself to shiny and kind and loving all over again.

How many times could she manage it? As awesome as Day was, could she be that resilient?

My phone buzzed, an incoming text alert, but I ignored it. You know what? Oaklynn was already dead and there were lots of people out in the main apartment who could handle things for now. Whoever killed her could wait. Daisy was the only thing on my mind as I guided her toward the padded bench in front of the massive mirror she used as a makeup counter, rocking her a little while her sobs echoed in the cold, marble space.

I looked around as I held her, wondering how she could live like this. The Daisy I loved had an eclectic sense of style, from giant flower patterns to glowing colors she adored tied into 60’s décor that all seemed to work into a picture perfect snapshot of the woman herself. This place? Felt like no one lived here, and don’t you dare make a mess to show otherwise.

Daisy finally leaned back, her hair hanging over her face to hide it from me, now loose from the pins that had held her updo in place. I didn’t fight her or her need to huddle, dejected and still struggling to pull herself together. For once, I did the right thing, held
